Tumut

Give Tumut one night, two at most: it is a car-based gateway to the Snowy Mountains, not a town you can see on foot in an afternoon.

Tumut sits at about 300 m on the north-west foothills of the Snowy Mountains, on the edge of the Riverina, and works as a low-cost base for the western side of the range: Yarrangobilly Caves, the thermal pool, Blowering Dam and the Snowy Mountains Highway run east towards Cooma. Almost everyone arrives by car; there is no scheduled air service and no town bus. Two nights lets you do the caves and a drive without rushing; one night is enough if you are only passing through between Wagga Wagga and Cooma.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: there is no local passenger bus, and the caves, dam and falls are all outside town. Hertz and Avis have offices in town (Hertz closed weekends). Taxis cover short trips. School buses from surrounding villages will carry passengers on request during school terms.

Yarrangobilly Caves and thermal pool

go

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min each way

Car east on the Snowy Mountains Highway, then the caves road

Cave tours are guided and ticketed; the thermal pool is a short walk from the car park. Check cave tour times and any closures before driving.

Talbingo and Blowering Dam

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Car south on the Snowy Mountains Highway

Dam lookouts, lake swimming and a small village; pairs well with a Yarrangobilly run.

Adaminaby

go

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Car east over the range on the Snowy Mountains Highway

High-country village and trout country; the drive itself is the point.

Coomacaution

Door to door: About 2 h

Car east on the Snowy Mountains Highway

Doable as a long day, but better as a one-way leg towards the Snowy Mountains or the Sapphire Coast.

Tumbarumba

go

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Car west and south via Batlow

Apple country and cool-climate wine; a half-day loop with Batlow.

Drive-in motels and the caravan park; easiest with a trailer or boat.

Riverglade / river flats

Caravan park style stays by the Tumut River; book ahead in summer and at Easter.

Watch out

Safety

Tumut is a small, low-crime country town; the real risks are wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, summer bushfire, and cold, icy mornings on the range in winter.
  • Kangaroos and wombats on the road at dawn and dusk, especially on the Snowy Mountains Highway.
  • Fuel and food gaps east of town: fill up in Tumut before the run to Yarrangobilly or Cooma.
  • Mobile coverage drops in the valleys and around the caves; download maps before you leave town.
  • Summer bushfire risk: check the NSW RFS and National Parks alerts before any drive into the range.
