Tumut
Give Tumut one night, two at most: it is a car-based gateway to the Snowy Mountains, not a town you can see on foot in an afternoon.
Tumut sits at about 300 m on the north-west foothills of the Snowy Mountains, on the edge of the Riverina, and works as a low-cost base for the western side of the range: Yarrangobilly Caves, the thermal pool, Blowering Dam and the Snowy Mountains Highway run east towards Cooma. Almost everyone arrives by car; there is no scheduled air service and no town bus. Two nights lets you do the caves and a drive without rushing; one night is enough if you are only passing through between Wagga Wagga and Cooma.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Kangaroos and wombats on the road at dawn and dusk, especially on the Snowy Mountains Highway.
- Fuel and food gaps east of town: fill up in Tumut before the run to Yarrangobilly or Cooma.
- Mobile coverage drops in the valleys and around the caves; download maps before you leave town.
- Summer bushfire risk: check the NSW RFS and National Parks alerts before any drive into the range.
Tumut is a small, low-crime country town; the real risks are wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, summer bushfire, and cold, icy mornings on the range in winter.
