Cooma is the last full-service town on the Monaro Highway before the Snowy Mountains, and one of the coldest towns in Australia in winter — nights from June to August often drop below freezing, occasionally to -10°C, though it is dry and daytime usually stays above 10°C. Most travellers pass through; those who stop get cheap beds, cheaper ski hire than at the resorts, and two free museums worth an hour each.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Cooma Coaches runs a town loop three times a day (morning, lunchtime, early afternoon). Taxis: 131 008. A car is needed for the Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre and for anything beyond town.

Watch out

Safety

Cooma is a small, safe country town; the real risks are winter cold, wildlife on the road at dusk, and long empty stretches of highway if you run out of fuel.
  • Winter nights fall below freezing from June to August; bring a proper jacket even for a one-night stop.
  • Cooma–Snowy Mountains Airport has no scheduled flights — do not book a fare that assumes one.
  • If you are driving into Kosciuszko National Park in winter, carry snow chains; renting them in Cooma is cheaper than at the resorts.
  • Fuel up here before heading south or west: the next services are far apart.
