Cooma
One night in Cooma is enough unless you are skiing: it is a supply stop and a cheaper bed than Jindabyne, 1 h from Canberra, 1 h from the snow.
Cooma is the last full-service town on the Monaro Highway before the Snowy Mountains, and one of the coldest towns in Australia in winter — nights from June to August often drop below freezing, occasionally to -10°C, though it is dry and daytime usually stays above 10°C. Most travellers pass through; those who stop get cheap beds, cheaper ski hire than at the resorts, and two free museums worth an hour each.
