Alang

Skip Alang unless you have a specific interest in shipbreaking or industrial photography. A half-day trip from Bhavnagar is enough to see the yard from a distance.

Alang is the world's largest shipbreaking yard, where hundreds of ships are dismantled each year by hand. The town itself has no tourist infrastructure, and the yard is not open to visitors. Photographers and industrial enthusiasts sometimes manage to get access, but most travellers will find the nearby cities of Bhavnagar, Palitana or Diu more rewarding.

Rules in force · 6
  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • India ↗Apply for the e-visa only on the official government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in); lookalike sites charge extra. Check the current rules, fees and how far ahead to apply.
  • India ↗Do not follow anyone who says your hotel is closed, the station ticket office is closed or a road is shut; use the prepaid taxi counter, the metro or an app car.
  • India ↗Carry Indian rupees in small notes (10, 20, 50, 100); change for 500 is often refused.
  • India ↗Parts of the Northeast, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and all border belts need a Protected or Restricted Area Permit or an Inner Line Permit for foreigners; check before you book the route.

Watch out

Safety

Alang is a working industrial zone. The main risks are from heavy machinery, falling objects and toxic materials inside the yard. Outside, the town is safe but has no tourist facilities. Heat and dehydration are concerns in summer.
  • The shipbreaking yard is a restricted industrial area; unauthorised entry is not allowed. Do not attempt to enter without permission.
  • Safety gear (helmet, boots) is mandatory inside the yard; the site is hazardous with sharp metal, heavy machinery and toxic materials.
  • Photography inside the yard is discouraged and may be confiscated. Ask at the gate before taking any pictures.
  • No accommodation, restaurants or ATMs in Alang itself. Stock up in Bhavnagar.
