Vila do Conde is a working fishing port and textile town at the mouth of the Ave, 30 km north of Porto and joined to Póvoa de Varzim along the coast. The old centre, the Santa Clara monastery and aqueduct, the lace museum and the replica nau take half a day; the beaches and the Friday market take the rest. Most travellers come on metro line B from Porto, or stop here on the Portuguese Coastal Camino.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. Metro line B links the centre, Azurara, Póvoa de Varzim, Porto and the airport; a ride inside town is about €1.40 (2026 estimate). Local buses (Litoral Norte, some Transdev) cost about €2.25 a ride (2026 estimate).

Watch out

Safety

A low-risk small city; the real issues are cold Atlantic surf with rip currents, uneven riverside paving at night, and pickpockets only around the Porto metro corridor.
  • Atlantic water is cold and the surf has rip currents: swim near lifeguards, in season only.
  • Metro line B splits towards Póvoa and the airport: check the destination board before boarding.
  • Many small restaurants close one weekday and shut the kitchen by 22:00; eat before 21:00.
  • The outlet is at Modivas, not in town: it needs the metro plus a shuttle.
