Braga is Portugal's archbishop city and the country's church capital: a compact old town of baroque squares and a 900-year-old cathedral, plus two hilltop sanctuaries 5 km east. It is 40 minutes from Porto by train, so most travellers see it as a day-trip or a single night on the way to the Minho. The university keeps prices low and the food is northern Portuguese: cod, roast kid, duck rice.

Getting around

The old town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. TUB city buses run in three fare zones (coroas); almost all sights sit in Coroa 1, Bom Jesus and Sameiro in Coroa 2. Uber and Bolt cover the city for short hops, and Bolt and Bird e-scooters are available. Trains and buses leave from separate stations about 1 km apart.

Watch out

Safety

Braga is a low-crime city by day; the main risks are the dark, empty old-town streets at night, pickpockets in Holy Week crowds, and the steep, uneven steps at Bom Jesus.
  • The centre empties and gets very dark after the bars fill; walk in pairs at night and stick to lit streets.
  • Braga is a rail terminus: reaching Guimarães or Viana do Castelo by train means doubling back through Porto, so take the bus instead.
  • Long-distance trains are few — about five a day, fewer at weekends — so book the Lisbon or Porto leg in advance.
  • A full ration of roast chicken is enough for three or four people; order half.
