Leduc

Stay 1 night only if you have an early YEG flight; otherwise sleep in Edmonton and treat Leduc as a 2–3 hour stop at the Leduc No. 1 oilwell.

Leduc is a small city of about 30,000 people immediately south of Edmonton International Airport (YEG), on the Queen Elizabeth 2 Highway between Edmonton and Calgary. Its reason to exist for travellers is the airport: hotels here are cheaper than downtown Edmonton and 5 minutes from the terminal. The one sight worth a detour is the Leduc No. 1 oilwell site in the county, where Alberta's oil boom began in February 1947. Downtown is a short main street with restaurants and a manmade lake at City Hall. If you are not flying, there is little here that Edmonton does not do better.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

Leduc is car-first: the QE2 (Hwy 2) runs through it, downtown to the airport is about 5 minutes, and the oilwell site is about a 15-minute drive. Leduc Transit covers the city plus an hourly airport run and an on-demand service on weekdays; taxis are cheap over these distances. Multiway trails along Telford Lake are good for walking and biking in summer.

Downtown Leduc (50 Street / 50 Avenue)

Walkable main street, restaurants, City Hall lake; about 5 minutes by car to YEG. Best if you want a town, not a parking lot.

Sparrow Drive / Sparrow Crescent (airport strip)

Cluster of airport hotels inside Leduc city limits, most with free YEG shuttles. Best for early departures and one-night layovers.

Nisku

Industrial and hotel strip 4 km (2.5 mi) north; the Ebus stop is here. Only useful if you arrive or leave by intercity bus.

Watch out

Safety

Leduc is a low-crime small city and the main risks are environmental: winter cold and ice, and drinking and driving. Downtown is quiet at night; use taxis rather than walking the highway corridors.
  • Winter is the real hazard: −20 °C (−4 °F) and below is normal in Jan, and roads ice over. Check the forecast before any drive.
  • Leduc's lakes are not for swimming.
  • Skating on the City Hall lake is only safe when ice thickness is checked: never assume.
  • Liquor is sold in private liquor stores only, not convenience stores; drinking age is 18 and photo ID is checked.
  • Do not drink and drive: fines, licence loss and jail are real. Use a designated driver or a taxi.
