  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Edmonton is Alberta's capital and the northernmost North American city of over a million people. It is a river-valley city first: over 100 km of trails run through the North Saskatchewan valley, and Fort Edmonton Park, Canada's largest historical park, sits inside it. West Edmonton Mall and a dense festival calendar fill the rest. Summer days run long, with daylight past 10PM in late June.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Edmonton Transit Service runs buses plus the LRT (Capital and Metro lines); a car helps for West Edmonton Mall and the outer suburbs. Downtown to Old Strathcona is a short ride or a 30–40 min walk across the High Level Bridge. Route 747 links YEG to Century Park LRT station.

South Central (Old Strathcona)

Whyte Avenue dining, bars and live music; University of Alberta nearby.

West End

West Edmonton Mall and chain hotels; car or bus needed for the centre.

South

Southgate Mall and Fort Edmonton Park; LRT reaches parts of it.

Watch out

Safety

Edmonton is generally safe for visitors. The real risks are winter cold, sprawl that strands you without a car, and downtown street disorder at night: stay on lit main streets and check the forecast before long walks.
  • Winter cold snaps can hit −30°C and below, usually for 1–2 days: keep a warm layer and lip balm, and check the forecast before long walks.
  • Winter storms can close highways around Edmonton for hours: check road conditions before any drive out of the city.
  • Downtown has pockets with visible street disorder, mostly around the core at night: stay on lit main streets.
  • Distances are large and sprawl is real: a 'nearby' address can be a 20-min drive.
