Pal

Half a day is enough to see the Romanesque church and the old village; add a full day if you ski or hike in the Vallnord area. Pal works as a quiet base near La Massana.

Pal is a small, protected Pyrenean village 12 km from Andorra la Vella, known for its 11th-century Church of Sant Climent de Pal and as the gateway to the Pal-Arinsal ski area (Vallnord). Most visitors come for a half-day stop or a ski/hike day; it is not a destination on its own.

Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Andorra ↗Andorra is outside the EU and Schengen: you leave the Schengen area when you enter and re-enter it when you leave. If you need a Schengen visa, make sure it allows multiple entries; check the official rules for your passport.
  • Andorra ↗Duty-free prices come with strict allowances on tobacco, alcohol and other goods when you return to Spain or France; customs checks are routine.
  • Andorra ↗In winter, snow chains or winter tyres may be required on the mountain roads; check road conditions before you drive.
  • Andorra ↗The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/GHIC) is not valid in Andorra, and mountain rescue and ski injuries are billed privately: travel insurance that covers skiing and hiking is essential.

Watch out

Safety

Pal is very safe. The main risks are mountain roads in winter (snow/ice) and altitude (1,500 m+).
  • Road CG-4 from La Massana to Pal is narrow and winding; drive carefully.
  • Ski passes and lift schedules vary by season; check Vallnord's official site.
  • The Church of Sant Climent is sometimes locked; ask at the Interpretation Centre for opening times.
