La Massana

Use La Massana as a ski base for Pal-Arinsal or a quiet stay near Andorra la Vella: 2–4 nights in winter, 1–2 nights in summer.

La Massana sits 6 km north of Andorra la Vella on the CG3, with a cable car to the Pal-Arinsal ski area. It's quieter than the capital but has enough restaurants and shops for a short stay. Most visitors use it as a ski base (2–4 nights) or a stopover for hiking in summer (1–2 nights).

Rules in force · 9Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
  • Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
  • Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
  • Andorra ↗Andorra is outside the EU and Schengen: you leave the Schengen area when you enter and re-enter it when you leave. If you need a Schengen visa, make sure it allows multiple entries; check the official rules for your passport.
  • Andorra ↗Duty-free prices come with strict allowances on tobacco, alcohol and other goods when you return to Spain or France; customs checks are routine.
  • Andorra ↗In winter, snow chains or winter tyres may be required on the mountain roads; check road conditions before you drive.
  • Andorra ↗The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/GHIC) is not valid in Andorra, and mountain rescue and ski injuries are billed privately: travel insurance that covers skiing and hiking is essential.

Watch out

Safety

La Massana is very safe. The main risks are mountain road conditions in winter and altitude (about 1,230 m) for those not used to it.
  • Cable car to Pal-Arinsal operates only during ski season (check dates).
  • Many restaurants and shops close in low season (Apr–May, Oct–Nov).
  • Mountain roads can be icy in winter; snow tyres or chains required by law.
  • Reserve church visits (Sant Iscle i Santa Victòria, Sant Climent de Pal) in advance.
