Kisumu is Kenya's third-largest city and the main port on the Kenyan side of Lake Victoria, at 1,131 m. It is a working Luo city, not a resort: the draw is the lake, the fish, the market and the wetlands, plus a base for Kakamega and the Kisii highlands. Two nights covers it; one is enough if you only want the lakefront.

Getting around

Matatus and boda boda motorcycle taxis cover the city cheaply; agree the fare before you get on. Taxis are worth it after dark. Traffic is lighter than Nairobi or Mombasa. Walking works in the centre by day.

Watch out

Safety

Calmer than Nairobi or Mombasa, but pickpockets work Kibuye Market and the bus parks. Do not walk the lake shore after dark, do not swim in the lake, and use a boda boda you booked rather than one that found you.
  • Pickpockets around Kibuye Market and the bus parks: carry little, keep bags in front.
  • Lock car doors in traffic and avoid driving the Nairobi road at night.
  • Roads can be unsafe after dark; travel by day where you can.
  • Expect police stops on intercity roads; carry your passport or a copy.
  • Lake Victoria has bilharzia and hippos: do not swim from the shore, and take boat trips with a life jacket.
