Lviv is western Ukraine's biggest city and its strongest cultural centre, a UNESCO-listed Old Town of cobbles, coffee houses and churches 70 km from the Polish border. Almost everything a visitor wants sits inside a 2 km walking circle around Rynok Square, so the city is cheap, compact and easy on foot. Airspace is closed, so you arrive overland from Poland or by train from Kyiv.

Getting around

The Old Town is a walking zone; trams and trolleybuses cover the rest. Pay by tapping an NFC bank card or phone on the validator inside the vehicle, or buy a LeoCard; cash to the driver costs more. Ride-hailing apps are cheap by European standards and most in-town trips stay under €5. A curfew runs overnight, so check app availability before a late arrival.

Safety

The Old Town is walkable and calm by day; the real variables are the war, the nightly curfew and winter ice on the cobbles. Read your government's advice first and keep an alert app on your phone.
  • Ukraine is under martial law: check your own government's travel advice and air-raid alerts before you go.
  • A nightly curfew applies — confirm the current hours on arrival; some ride-hailing apps stop running during it.
  • Driving in the central zone is banned on Sundays and holidays; signs are in Cyrillic only.
  • Cross-border trains and buses need tickets booked online ahead of time; seats sell out.
  • Card and cash both work, but keep some hryvnia for small cafés and markets.
