Destination OS · Spray mornings, river sunsets
Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is a two-or-three-day town: see the falls at opening, rest through the heat, take the bridge and the river in the late afternoon, and use a taxi after dark, because elephants and other animals walk the streets.

- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- Southern Africa ↗A rental car may leave its home country only with the rental company's cross-border letter, the registration papers and paid road taxes at each post; driving into Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Angola without them ends at the border.
- Southern Africa ↗Across the subregion, plan every road leg to arrive before sunset: livestock, wildlife, pedestrians and unlit trucks make night driving the main cause of serious visitor accidents.
- Zimbabwe ↗Check visa and entry rules for your passport on official Zimbabwean government sources; if you will cross to Zambia, ask about the KAZA UniVisa and whether it is available to you.
- Zimbabwe ↗Do not photograph government buildings, police, the military or border posts.
- Zimbabwe ↗Bring enough US dollars in small, clean notes; do not rely on ATMs or foreign cards outside Victoria Falls, Harare and lodges.
- Victoria Falls and Hwange ↗Prepay lodges and transfers; do not drive between Victoria Falls and Hwange after dark.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go
Overview
The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.
The falls are 2 km from town, the heat peaks at midday and, from March to May, the spray can hide the view and soak you. The trips that go wrong walk between hotels after dark, arrive with too little cash in small notes, or plan Hwange or Chobe on the same day as the falls. Four areas cover a first visit; the safari is a trip away from one kept bed.
Fits
- First-time Africa visitors
- Short safari add-ons
- Travellers who want a river sunset and a walkable falls
Does not fit
- Strollers and wheelchairs (paths and pavements)
- Travellers with no US dollars in small notes
- Night walkers
- 2 days
- Falls at opening, bridge and terrace in the afternoon
- 3 days
- Falls, bridge and terrace, one activity day (river, Chobe day trip or a flight over the falls)
- 5 days
- Victoria Falls 3 + Hwange 2, by road or by light aircraft
- Don't confuse
- The falls are shared with Zambia: this line covers the Zimbabwe side and the town of Victoria Falls; Livingstone is a different town and country across the bridge.
Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.
Off the map: Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) (25–40 min by the usual route).
Where’s what, as a list:
- Town centre (Parkway and Livingstone Way): Errands and evening cluster: cash, SIM, shops, curio stalls and restaurants within about 600 m; walk it in daylight and take a taxi after dark.

- Victoria Falls Bridge and gorge: Late-afternoon cluster: the 1905 railway bridge and its viewing area over the gorge; the bridge crosses into Zambia, so do not walk past the border post without a visa plan.
- Victoria Falls Hotel and Zambezi Drive: Sunset cluster: the colonial-era hotel terrace with a view of the bridge and spray, and the shops along the road; tea or a sundowner, then a taxi home.
- Sleep area Near the falls (Zambezi Drive and Mallet Drive): suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.
- Sleep area Town centre (Parkway): suits Families, older travellers, solo on a budget, price band $$.
