Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a two-or-three-day town: see the falls at opening, rest through the heat, take the bridge and the river in the late afternoon, and use a taxi after dark, because elephants and other animals walk the streets.

The falls are 2 km from town, the heat peaks at midday and, from March to May, the spray can hide the view and soak you. The trips that go wrong walk between hotels after dark, arrive with too little cash in small notes, or plan Hwange or Chobe on the same day as the falls. Four areas cover a first visit; the safari is a trip away from one kept bed.

By air

Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA)
VFA to town: a pre-booked hotel transfer or an airport taxi, about 25–40 minutes; the risk is not the ride but arriving after the last daylight flight, when taxis at the rank thin out and guesthouse desks close.

Get around

Walk inside a cluster by day; taxi between clusters and always after dark.

Passes

No rail or bus for visitors; taxis and hotel shuttles only, with fewer after dark.

See and do

    Go at opening, when the light is low, the path is quiet and the day is not yet hot; 60–90 minutes along the viewpoints, longer in low water when more of the gorge shows. In high water you will be soaked: carry a rain layer and a dry bag for the phone.

  2. 02Victoria Falls Bridge

    Go in the late afternoon, when the deck is cooler and the gorge is lit from the side: 20–30 minutes at the viewing area; the bridge is also the border with Zambia, so do not cross unless you have your visa sorted.

Sleep

Near the falls (Zambezi Drive and Mallet Drive)
Walk to the bridge and the hotel terrace, and a short taxi to the falls entrance; larger hotels here have lifts and a door the transfer can reach, and it costs more than town.
Town centre (Parkway)
The practical first night: shops, cash and taxis are a short walk away, and hotels here have a desk that stays staffed; move to a hotel near the falls for night 2 if you want to walk to the bridge.

Language

English is widely spoken and taught in schools. Shona is the main language in the north and east, Ndebele in the south-west around Bulawayo and Victoria Falls; Tonga is spoken along the Zambezi.

  • Elders: Lower your eyes slightly and use both hands to give or receive; avoid: Pointing at people
  • Politics: Listen; avoid: Opinions on the government in public
  • Dress: Modest dress in towns and villages; avoid: Camouflage prints

Red lines

  • Do not photograph government buildings, police, soldiers or the border post.
  • Do not swim in the Zambezi outside a licensed, guided activity: crocodiles and hippos.
  • Ask before photographing people.

  • Currency 'change' at the border or in town: Do not change money on the street; use US dollars or a bank.
  • Fake e-visa sites: Only evisa.gov.zw.
  • Bridge 'tour' touts: Book activities through licensed operators.
  • Old-currency notes sold as souvenirs or change: Bearer cheques and old Zimbabwe dollar notes are worthless; buy as curios only.
  • Roadblock 'fines' without receipt: Stay polite; ask for an official receipt; carry reflective triangles and fire extinguisher as required.
