Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
- Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
- Hungary ↗Hungary is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
- Hungary ↗The currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion at cards and ATMs.
- Hungary ↗Motorways need an electronic vignette (e-matrica) bought before you drive on them.
Dunakeszi is a 44,000-person town on the left bank of the Danube, 25 minutes by suburban train from Budapest Nyugati and the first settlement of the Danube Bend. It has no old town and no hotel strip. What it does have: a riverside promenade with the remains of a late Roman harbour fortlet, a handful of churches, a gravel-pit lake for fishing, and ferry piers that cross to Szentendre Island. Treat it as a half-day from Budapest or a bike stop on the riverside path toward Szob.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The town is walkable end to end in about 40 minutes along Fő út, but sights are strung out north–south: the station and centre sit mid-town, the ferry pier and Roman fortlet are 3 km north. Suburban buses (300–306) run from Budapest Újpest Városkapu and stop at the town hall. Trains from Budapest Nyugati stop at Dunakeszi and Dunakeszi-alsó. Taxis are few; book ahead.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Door to door: About 45 min
Suburban train from Dunakeszi or Dunakeszi-alsó to Nyugati
The reason most people are here: the town is a dormitory suburb of the capital.
Szentendre
cautionDoor to door: 1–1.5 h
Ferry across to Szentendre Island, then onward transport — check seasonal times
Ferries run half-hourly in season but stop in the evening; not a reliable return leg.
Visegrád
cautionDoor to door: 2–2.5 h
Train or bus to Budapest, then bus along the Danube Bend
Doable, but you pass through Budapest; better done as its own day from the capital.
Esztergom
cautionDoor to door: 2.5–3 h
Train via Budapest, or bus along the river
Long for a return trip; consider it a separate stop.
Vác
goDoor to door: About 30 min
Train north from Dunakeszi station
Bishop's town with a triumphal arch and a main square worth an afternoon.
Szob
goDoor to door: Half a day by bike
Riverside bike path north along the Danube
The path starts near the ferry pier; flat, but no shade in the middle of the day.
Eat & sleep
Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Riverside (Duna sor / Rév utca)
Guesthouses and the ferry pier; quiet, but few beds and no shops within walking distance.
Centre (Fő út / Verseny utca)
Around the railway station and town hall; supermarkets and buses, but road noise on the main road.
Alag and Felsőgöd side
Suburban streets near the racecourse and glider airfield; only useful if you have a car.

Coming as the guide grows
- Airport-to-bed contract for BUD: rail link to Dunakeszi checked, taxi fallback, late-arrival rung.
- Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: station and centre, St Michael's and the funerary park, the lake, the riverside and ferry pier.
- Place pages with verified cutoffs (Roman fortlet by booking only, churches, Révész István collection) and eat pages with last orders.
- Ferry timetable fixtures for the three piers so seasonal and evening gaps are visible before booking.
