  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Woodstock is a small southwestern Ontario city on the upper Thames, halfway between London and Kitchener on Highway 401. Downtown Dundas Street holds a century of brick storefronts, two free museums and the old town hall; Vansittart Avenue has some of Ontario's best-preserved Victorian houses. It works as a single night on a London–Toronto drive, or a half-day stop on the VIA Windsor–Toronto line, not as a destination on its own.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Woodstock Transit runs six routes Monday–Friday 06:00–22:00 and Saturday 08:00–22:00, roughly every 30 min; no Sunday service. Downtown is compact enough to walk. Taxis cover the rest; a car is needed for the parks and the 401 strip.

London, Ontario

go

Festival theatre from April to October; book tickets before you go.

Ingersoll, Ontario

caution

Door to door: About 15–20 min

VIA Rail one stop east, or a short drive on Highway 401

Small cheese-town stop; only worth it if you are already on the train line.

Grand Bend

go

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Car via Highway 4 and Highway 81 north

Lake Huron beach day in July and August; go early for parking.

Sarnia

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min by car

Car on Highway 402, or VIA west with a change

Long for a return day; better as an overnight on the way to the US border.

Goderich

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Car via Highway 8 and Highway 23

Lake Huron harbour town; sleep one night rather than rush back.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown Dundas Street

Walk to both museums, the gallery and the pubs; the guest house on Vansittart Avenue is here.

Highway 401 / Athlone Avenue

Chain hotels with parking, 5–10 min drive from downtown; best for one night with a car.

Rural B&B (Beaconsfield Road)

Cheapest beds, but you need a car for everything.

Watch out

Safety

A low-risk small city; the real issues are winter driving on the 401, unlit riverside trails after dark and early kitchen closing times.
  • No city buses on Sundays: plan Saturday arrivals or budget for a taxi.
  • Most sights sit on Dundas Street; the 401 hotels are a 5–10 min drive away, not a walk.
  • Winter brings snow and ice from December to March: check road conditions before driving the 401.
  • Small-town kitchens close early; last orders are often before 21:00.
