Boyolali is a rural regency on the east flank of Merapi and Merbabu, about 30 km west of Solo. It is known for milk, soto seger and two small 9th-century Hindu temples at Cepogo. Most travellers pass through on the Solo–Semarang toll road or sleep here before a Merbabu climb from Selo. The town itself is a half-day; the mountain and the villages are the reason to stop.

Safety

Boyolali is a low-crime rural regency and generally safe for travellers. The real risks are mountain roads after dark, Merbabu weather, and volcanic activity on Merapi and Merbabu: check the official status before any hike.
  • Mountain roads to Selo and Cepogo are steep and foggy after dark; do not drive them at night if you are new to them.
  • Merbabu summit hikes start around 1–2 am and need a registered guide and a permit: arrange both before you arrive.
  • Rain peaks around March; trails and village roads turn to mud.
  • Bring cash: smaller warungs and village stalls may not take cards.
