Lugano is Switzerland's largest Italian-speaking city, on a lake with two funicular mountains above it and the Italian border 20 minutes away. It works as a relaxed 2-night base in Ticino, or as a Milan Malpensa arrival point. Costs are Swiss, not Italian: budget CHF 120–180 a day.

Getting around

Walk the centre: the old town and lakefront are flat and largely car-free, but the station sits on a steep hill. The Città–Stazione funicular runs every 5–10 min from about 05:20 to 23:50 for CHF 1.10. TPL buses cover the hills; a 1-zone day card is CHF 7.20 and a 30-min short ticket CHF 1.90. Boats and the two mountain funiculars are the sightseeing transport.

Watch out

Safety

Lugano is a low-crime city and the centre is safe at night. Real risks are the steep, uneven lanes above the lake, summer heat on exposed trails, and pickpockets around the station and lakefront in high season.
  • The station is uphill from the lake: use the funicular with bags, not the stairs.
  • Lake Lugano crosses into Italy: carry your passport on boat trips.
  • Mealtimes are strict; many kitchens close between lunch and dinner, so a 15:45 meal is hard to find.
  • Sunday shopping is limited: station shops and petrol-station Migrolino are the fallbacks.
  • San Salvatore and Brè funiculars run reduced schedules outside mid-summer: check the day's timetable.
