Lugano
Give Lugano 2 nights as a lake-and-mountain base, not a day stop: the old town is 2 hours, the funiculars and Gandria walk need a full day.
Lugano is Switzerland's largest Italian-speaking city, on a lake with two funicular mountains above it and the Italian border 20 minutes away. It works as a relaxed 2-night base in Ticino, or as a Milan Malpensa arrival point. Costs are Swiss, not Italian: budget CHF 120–180 a day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; three cheek kisses among friends; avoid: Skipping the greeting in shops
- Punctuality: Be exactly on time; avoid: Running for the train expecting it to wait
- Language: Greet in the local language, then ask for English; avoid: Speaking German in Geneva as a default
- Quiet: Low voices in trains; quiet carriages are marked; avoid: Speakerphone calls
- Money: Keep financial talk discreet; avoid: Asking people's salaries
- Recycling: Separate PET, glass and cans; avoid: Leaving rubbish in hotel or flat bins unsorted
Scams and watch-outs
- The station is uphill from the lake: use the funicular with bags, not the stairs.
- Lake Lugano crosses into Italy: carry your passport on boat trips.
- Mealtimes are strict; many kitchens close between lunch and dinner, so a 15:45 meal is hard to find.
- Sunday shopping is limited: station shops and petrol-station Migrolino are the fallbacks.
- San Salvatore and Brè funiculars run reduced schedules outside mid-summer: check the day's timetable.
Lugano is a low-crime city and the centre is safe at night. Real risks are the steep, uneven lanes above the lake, summer heat on exposed trails, and pickpockets around the station and lakefront in high season.
