DanvilleDanville, California
Give Danville one night, or a half-day stop between Walnut Creek and Pleasanton: downtown on foot, then a trail or the auto museum by car.
Danville is a small, wealthy Contra Costa suburb in the San Ramon Valley, between Mount Diablo and the Las Trampas ridge, about 35-45 min by car from Oakland and 1 h from San Francisco outside rush hour. Downtown Hartz Avenue is walkable in under 30 minutes; everything else — Blackhawk, the regional parks, the O'Neill site — needs a car or a bus. Most visitors use it as a quiet, low-risk base for the Tri-Valley and Mount Diablo rather than a destination in itself.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
Downtown is walkable; the rest of town is not. County Connection routes 21 (weekdays) and 321 (weekends) run through downtown between Walnut Creek and San Ramon, roughly every 30-60 min on weekdays and hourly at weekends. BART does not reach Danville: connect at Walnut Creek or Dublin/Pleasanton. A car is the practical choice for Mount Diablo, Blackhawk and the trailheads.

Where the main chain hotels sit; 5-10 min by car from downtown, free parking.
Blackhawk
Quieter, upscale, car-only; Blackhawk Plaza and the museum are here.
