Mörön is the capital of Khövsgöl province and the practical hinge for the north: the airport, the supermarkets, the hospital and the jeep drivers. The town itself is a grid of Soviet-era blocks with a rebuilt monastery, a provincial museum and a Bronze Age deer-stone site 17 km west. Almost everyone passes through on the way to Lake Khövsgöl, and that is the right way to use it.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 30 minutes. Taxis are informal and cheap; agree the fare first. For the lake, the deer stones or Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur you need a hired jeep and driver — arrange it in Ulaanbaatar or through your guesthouse, not on the street.

Watch out

Safety

Mörön is a small, low-crime provincial town and the main risks are practical: unsealed roads, long distances, sudden weather and thin medical cover. Travel with a driver who knows the route, carry cash and water, and treat the winter cold as a hazard, not a nuisance.
  • Wednesdays are alcohol-free days in the province: shops and bars do not sell alcohol.
  • The road north to Lake Khövsgöl is unsealed for long stretches; 100 km can take 3–4 hours in the wet.
  • Summer flights and buses fill up: book the Ulaanbaatar leg days ahead.
  • Cash is king outside the few hotels; ATMs exist but can be empty or offline.
