One night, not a destination: Mörön is the supply town and airport for Lake Khövsgöl, 3–4 h north by rough road. Skip it unless you fly in or need a bed.
Mörön is the capital of Khövsgöl province and the practical hinge for the north: the airport, the supermarkets, the hospital and the jeep drivers. The town itself is a grid of Soviet-era blocks with a rebuilt monastery, a provincial museum and a Bronze Age deer-stone site 17 km west. Almost everyone passes through on the way to Lake Khövsgöl, and that is the right way to use it.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 30 minutes. Taxis are informal and cheap; agree the fare first. For the lake, the deer stones or Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur you need a hired jeep and driver — arrange it in Ulaanbaatar or through your guesthouse, not on the street.

Etiquette
- Entering a ger: Call 'Nokhoi khorio' from a distance, enter right foot first without knocking, move clockwise to the left (west) side; avoid: Stepping on the threshold, walking between the two pillars, turning your back to the altar
- Offered food or drink: Receive with the right hand (left hand supporting the elbow), taste a little; avoid: Refusing outright or taking with the left hand only
- Snuff bottle exchange: When a man offers his snuff bottle, take it with the right hand, open slightly, sniff and hand it back; avoid: Taking snuff if you do not want it — just smell the cap
- Feet and knocks: If you step on someone's foot, shake their hand straight away; avoid: Leaving the touch unacknowledged — it is seen as the start of a quarrel
- Fire and stove: Treat the stove as sacred; avoid: Throwing rubbish into the fire or pointing your feet at it
- Hats: Hold a hat by the crown, remove it inside; avoid: Stepping over or throwing a hat
- Guests and gifts: Bring small gifts (fruit, sweets, vodka for elders, photos of your family) to a nomad family; avoid: Handing out sweets to children on the roadside
- Leaving: Keep goodbyes short; your guide will lead them; avoid: Whistling inside a ger
Scams and watch-outs
- Wednesdays are alcohol-free days in the province: shops and bars do not sell alcohol.
- The road north to Lake Khövsgöl is unsealed for long stretches; 100 km can take 3–4 hours in the wet.
- Summer flights and buses fill up: book the Ulaanbaatar leg days ahead.
- Cash is king outside the few hotels; ATMs exist but can be empty or offline.
Mörön is a small, low-crime provincial town and the main risks are practical: unsealed roads, long distances, sudden weather and thin medical cover. Travel with a driver who knows the route, carry cash and water, and treat the winter cold as a hazard, not a nuisance.
