Toki土岐市

Skip Toki unless you are a pottery buyer or on a Mino-yaki trail: half a day is enough for the ceramic district and a kiln visit.

Toki is a mid-sized city in Gifu Prefecture, one of Japan's largest pottery-producing regions under the Mino-yaki name. The town itself is quiet, with a few kiln studios and a ceramic museum. Most travellers pass through on the Chuo Expressway or the JR Chuo Line between Nagoya and Matsumoto. It works as a short stop for anyone interested in ceramics, but not as a destination.

Rules in force · 5
  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.

Watch out

Safety

Toki is a safe small city. The main risk is traffic on the narrow roads near the station; watch for cars on the pavement.
  • Most pottery studios are small and may be closed without notice: call ahead or check the tourist association site.
  • The Toki Ceramic Park has a museum and a shop but no English labels on many exhibits.
  • Last trains from Nagoya to Toki run until about 23:00; after that, a taxi costs about ¥10,000 (≈ US$70).
