Clifden is the market town of Connemara: about 1,250 residents, a Victorian main street, and the N59 running through it. It works as a two-night base for the Sky Road, the beaches at Dog's Bay and the islands off Cleggan. You need a car or a tour to see the coast properly; the town itself is walkable in 15 minutes.

Getting around

The town is flat and walkable; everything on Main St and Market St is within 15 minutes on foot. For the Sky Road, Dog's Bay, Cleggan and Kylemore you need a car, a taxi hired by the day, or a guided tour. Bikes can be hired in town in season. Citylink 923 and Bus Éireann 423 stop at the library on Main St.

Watch out

Safety

Clifden is a low-crime small town; the real risks are Atlantic weather, single-track roads and cold water. Tell someone your route if you walk the hills, and carry a waterproof.
  • Single-track roads with passing places are normal in Connemara: pull in, do not reverse at speed.
  • Summer accommodation books out for the Arts Festival and bank-holiday weekends; reserve weeks ahead.
  • Many restaurants and B&Bs close from November to February or open only April–October: check before you book a winter trip.
  • Mobile signal is patchy on the coast and islands; download maps and tickets before you leave town.
  • The ruined castle and the Alcock & Brown site are on working farmland: leave gates as you find them and do not enter the ruin.
