Galway is Ireland's fourth-largest city and the west's practical base: a compact medieval centre on the River Corrib, a student population that keeps the pubs loud, and buses and tours leaving daily for Connemara, the Burren and the Aran Islands. Two nights covers the city; three or four lets you add a day trip without rushing. It rains most months, so pack for wind and wet, not for a heatwave.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes; Salthill is a 30-minute walk along the Prom. City buses (Bus Éireann and City Direct) all meet at Eyre Square, with cash fares around €2.40–3.50 and about 30% off with a TFI Leap Card. Taxis are metered and ranks sit at Eyre Square and Bridge Street. Do not drive into the centre: parking is limited and expensive.

Watch out

Safety

Galway is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are the weather, wet pavements, and late-night crowds around Shop Street and Eyre Square: watch your bag and your step.
  • Rain and wind year-round: a rain jacket beats an umbrella.
  • Pub music sessions are free to listen to, but buy a drink and keep quiet during a song.
  • Book accommodation months ahead for race week in late July and the Arts Festival in July.
  • City parking is scarce and pricey; use a car park at the edge and walk.
  • Some pubs and restaurants add a service charge for larger groups: check the bill.
