  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Hohhot is the capital of Inner Mongolia and the region's transport hub, 2.5 hours from Beijing by high-speed rail. It is a working industrial city with a small, walkable old core: Tibetan-Buddhist temples, a Chinese-style mosque, and free museums. Most travellers use it as a base for grassland trips rather than as a destination in itself.

Getting around

Metro Line 1 runs east–west (airport to Yili Health Valley) and Line 2 north–south, meeting at Xinhua Square; signs are in Mandarin, Mongolian and English. Taxis start at ¥8 and are plentiful except around 14:00–15:00 and in rain. Buses stop around 20:30 in winter. Shared bikes via Alipay or WeChat are the fastest way to cover the old town.

Watch out

Safety

Hohhot is generally safe for tourists; the real risks are winter cold, traffic and unlicensed grassland tours. Use the meter in taxis and agree tour prices in writing before you go.
  • Winter runs to -15°C with wind: pack for it if you come Nov–Mar.
  • Traffic jams are common; allow extra time by taxi at peak hours.
  • Some museum captions are Chinese-only; the Inner Mongolia Museum has the most English.
  • Grassland day tours from the city are often long drives with little time on the grass: check the itinerary before booking.
