Hohhot is the capital of Inner Mongolia and the region's transport hub, 2.5 hours from Beijing by high-speed rail. It is a working industrial city with a small, walkable old core: Tibetan-Buddhist temples, a Chinese-style mosque, and free museums. Most travellers use it as a base for grassland trips rather than as a destination in itself.

Scams and watch-outs

- Grassland day tours from the city are often long drives with little time on the grass: check the itinerary before booking.
