Give Ladysmith a few hours or one night off Highway 1 between Nanaimo and Duncan: First Avenue, Transfer Beach, Holland Creek. Two nights only if you want the trails.
Ladysmith is a small harbour town of about 8,500 people on the east coast of Vancouver Island, 26 km south of Nanaimo and 85 km north of Victoria on the Trans-Canada Highway. It was founded around 1898 as a coal company town, and its Edwardian main street and waterfront park are the whole visit. Most travellers see it in a few hours on the way between Nanaimo and Duncan, or sleep one night to walk the Holland Creek trails.

Getting around
The town centre is walkable: First Avenue to Transfer Beach is about 10 minutes on foot. BC Transit's Cowichan Valley system runs local Route 31 and connects Ladysmith with Chemainus (Route 34), Duncan (Route 36) and Nanaimo (Route 70). Local trips cost C$2.50 and Ladysmith–Nanaimo on Route 70 is C$7.50 (check). A car makes the day trips practical.
