Ladysmith, British Columbia
Give Ladysmith a few hours or one night off Highway 1 between Nanaimo and Duncan: First Avenue, Transfer Beach, Holland Creek. Two nights only if you want the trails.
Ladysmith is a small harbour town of about 8,500 people on the east coast of Vancouver Island, 26 km south of Nanaimo and 85 km north of Victoria on the Trans-Canada Highway. It was founded around 1898 as a coal company town, and its Edwardian main street and waterfront park are the whole visit. Most travellers see it in a few hours on the way between Nanaimo and Duncan, or sleep one night to walk the Holland Creek trails.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Bus service is Monday to Saturday and thin in the evening: check the last trip before you rely on it.
- The nearest hospital is in Duncan, south on Highway 1: for anything serious, go there or call 911.
- Winter is wet and dark early; many waterfront and tour operators close outside summer.
- Some shops on First Avenue keep short or seasonal hours: check before making a special trip.
A quiet small town; the real risks are wet winter roads on Highway 1, cold water at Transfer Beach and unmarked trail junctions on Holland Creek. 911 works everywhere.
