Give Bari 2 nights: one for Bari Vecchia and the seafront, one as a base for Polignano or Matera. Skip it as a beach stop.
Bari is Puglia's capital and its main transport hub: ferries to Greece, Albania and Montenegro, trains to Matera and the trulli towns, and an airport 9 km out. The old town is small and walkable, the Murat grid is where you sleep and shop. Most travellers use Bari as a 2-night base, not a destination in itself.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: Murat to Bari Vecchia is 10–15 min on foot. AMTAB city buses cost €1 pre-purchased, €1.50 on board. Trains from Bari Centrale cover the region: Ferrovie del Sud Est to Alberobello, Ferrovie Appulo Lucane to Matera, Ferrotramviaria to the airport. Parking in blue zones is paid Mon–Sat 08:30–20:30, free Sundays and holidays.
