Margraten is a village of about 3,400 people on the N278 between Maastricht and Aachen, and it exists on the traveller map for one reason: the Netherlands American Cemetery, where 8,301 American service members are buried and 1,722 missing are named on the Walls of the Missing. The village itself is a small shopping street around the Amerikaplein and a 19th-century church with a late-medieval tower. There is no train station, a handful of places to eat, and a few beds. Most visitors come as a half-day trip from Maastricht, Valkenburg or Gulpen; a smaller number stay two or three nights to walk the South Limburg hills.

Getting around

The village is small enough to walk end to end in 10 minutes. The cemetery is about 1.5 km from the centre along the N278 — a 20-minute walk on a road with no proper footpath in places, so many people take the bus instead. Bus line 50 links Maastricht, Margraten, Gulpen, Vaals and Aachen; lines 150 (Gulpen–Maastricht) and 48 (Valkenburg) also stop near the cemetery at the Militair Kerkhof stop. There is no train station. A car or bike makes the surrounding villages (Cadier en Keer, Noorbeek, Mheer, Sint Geertruid) far easier.

Around the Amerikaplein and Pastoor Brouwersstraat: supermarket, pharmacy, café, church. Walkable to everything except the cemetery.

Groot Welsden and Honthem

Hamlets just outside the village, 1–3 km out; guesthouses and holiday houses with gardens, best for walkers with a car or bike.

Maastricht or Valkenburg (base elsewhere)

Both are 15–20 min by car and have far more beds, restaurants and evening life. Most visitors sleep here and visit Margraten by day.

Safety

Very safe. The genuine risks are the N278 road when walking to the cemetery, thin evening and Sunday buses, and long stretches of unlit countryside if you are hiking late.
  • The walk to the cemetery follows the N278, a busy main road with limited pavement: take the bus or drive if you have children or luggage.
  • Buses are thin on Sundays and in the evening; check the last departure back before you start the visit.
  • Village shops and eateries keep short hours and several close one or two days a week; do not count on a late meal.
  • The cemetery is an active memorial ground: quiet, no picnics on the graves, and no drone flying.
  • Regional hotels and guesthouses fill on event weekends in South Limburg; book ahead in spring and autumn.
