Margraten
Come for the Netherlands American Cemetery, not the village: 2–3 hours on site, half a day door to door from Maastricht. Sleep elsewhere unless you are hiking.
Margraten is a village of about 3,400 people on the N278 between Maastricht and Aachen, and it exists on the traveller map for one reason: the Netherlands American Cemetery, where 8,301 American service members are buried and 1,722 missing are named on the Walls of the Missing. The village itself is a small shopping street around the Amerikaplein and a 19th-century church with a late-medieval tower. There is no train station, a handful of places to eat, and a few beds. Most visitors come as a half-day trip from Maastricht, Valkenburg or Gulpen; a smaller number stay two or three nights to walk the South Limburg hills.
