Heerlen is a former coal town in hilly South Limburg, 30 min by train from Maastricht and 25 min from Aachen. Its two real sights are the Thermenmuseum, built over a Roman bathhouse, and the Dutch Mine Museum in a former mine shaft. The centre is car-free and walkable in an hour; the surrounding heath and hills are the reason to stay a night.

Getting around

The centre is car-free and walkable end to end in about 20 min. Buses run from the terminal behind the station to the outer districts. OV-fiets bikes at the station cost about €3.85 per 24 h; note the hills once you leave the centre. Trains: NS intercity to Eindhoven via Sittard and Roermond, Arriva stopping trains to Maastricht, Kerkrade and Sittard, and DB Regio to Herzogenrath and Aachen twice hourly.

Watch out

Safety

Heerlen is a normal mid-size Dutch city and safe by day; the centre is quiet at night, so stick to lit streets around the station and Bongerd. The real risks are traffic (bikes and one-way streets) and hills on a bike.
  • The centre is car-free and many streets are one-way; park in a garage and walk. Q-Park de Klomp and Maanplein charge about €8 (≈ US$10) for a day.
  • Cyclists are allowed on some central streets: look before you step off the pavement.
  • Outside the centre the terrain is hilly, not flat Dutch polder; plan bike distances accordingly.
  • Some museums and the observatory keep short or limited hours: check before you travel.
