Emmen is Drenthe's largest city, a former peat-colony town of about 57,000 people, and it is on the map for one thing: Wildlands, the biggest zoo in the northern Netherlands, rebuilt in 2016 as a theme-park-style animal park. The centre has a Romanesque church tower, a 19th-century synagogue and a large shopping street, but most travellers come for the zoo and leave. It works as a single night or a day trip from Groningen or Assen, not as a base for the region.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable. Wildlands is about a 15-minute walk from Emmen station, signposted the whole way, or a short bus ride to Centrum or Weerdingerstraat (about 100 m from the entrance). Bicycles can be rented at the station; buses from the terminal serve the suburbs and Groningen. Two stations (Emmen and Emmen Zuid) sit on the same twice-hourly line to Zwolle.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are wet, dark cycle paths after rain, deer and cyclists on the Hondsrug lanes, and the long walk back from the zoo after closing: plan the bus or a taxi.
  • The zoo has no car park of its own: use Q-Park or town parking and walk in.
  • Wildlands' website and the 4D ride are in Dutch and German; enclosure labels are in English.
  • Bus 922 to Meppen in Germany runs only 4 times a day, Monday to Saturday.
  • Sunday shopping is limited outside the centre; supermarkets keep weekday hours.
