Go for 2 nights in Jun–Aug: free beaches, a 464 m pier and the Balaton south-shore train. Skip outside late May–Sep unless you want a quiet base.
Fonyód is a small south-shore Balaton town (about 4,900 people) built around a hill, a long pier and a string of free beaches. It is compact enough to walk, has a main-line rail station with direct trains from Budapest, and works best as a 2-night summer base for swimming, the lookout and day trips along the shore. Outside the season it is very quiet.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: station, bus stop, port, pier and main beach sit within about 1 km. For Bélatelep, Fonyódliget and the outer beaches use the local train along the south shore or a bike; a car helps for the market and out-of-town sights. Trains run to Siófok, Keszthely and Budapest, and the ferry pier links to the north shore in season.

Safety
- Many restaurants, buffets and the Tourinform office close outside Jun–Aug: check opening before you travel.
- The lake is shallow and warms early, but summer storms arrive fast; leave the water when thunder starts.
- Free beaches have limited lifeguard cover: check flags and posted rules on the day.
- Some listed sights (for example the Crypt-villa) have been closed for years: do not plan around them.
- Market days (Wed and Sat mornings) fill the parking near Gáz utca: arrive early or park 500 m away.
