Kalundborg is a small west-Zealand town of about 17,000 people on a fjord between the Røsnæs and Asnæs peninsulas. Its medieval High Town holds a five-towered church from around 1220, and the 15-km Røsnæs peninsula west of town is the nature draw. The train from Copenhagen takes 1 h 30 min to 1 h 50 min, so it works as a day-trip or a single overnight stop on the way to Aarhus or Samsø by ferry.

The centre is walkable. A few city buses run up to twice an hour. Røsnæs is 15 km long with no useful bus coverage: bring a bike on the train or drive.

Safety

Kalundborg is a low-risk small town; the real issues are weather on the exposed Røsnæs coast, dark unlit paths after sunset and thin late bus service.
  • Røsnæs has thin bus service; without a bike or car you will see little of the peninsula.
  • Several Røsnæs and beach places close outside the summer season: check before you build a day around one.
  • Ferry seats to Aarhus and Samsø sell out on summer weekends: book ahead.
