Holbæk is a harbour town of about 30,000 on the Copenhagen–Kalundborg line, roughly 50 minutes from Copenhagen and 30 from Roskilde. Its draw is small and local: a 1600–1900 museum quarter, a co-operative history village, a fjord-side swimming spot and the gateway train to the Odsherred peninsula. Most travellers use it for one night or a half-day between Copenhagen and West Zealand.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: station to harbour is about 15 minutes. Ten city buses leave from the station, most hourly. Taxis are metered; call ahead in the evening. The train west continues to Kalundborg, and the private line from Holbæk station runs to Nykøbing Sjælland for Odsherred.

Holbæk is a low-risk town; the real issues are weather, hourly buses and dark, unlit paths along the inlet at night. Standard Denmark advice applies: 112 for emergencies.
