Getting around

A car is the practical choice: I-880 runs along the bay, I-680 along the hills, and the two never meet in Fremont. BART (Fremont and Warm Springs/South Fremont stations) covers Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco; AC Transit buses are built for commuters, with midday gaps of up to an hour. Taxis queue only at the BART station, so book rides ahead. Many main roads have protected bike lanes.

Watch out

Safety

Fremont is a low-crime suburb by Bay Area standards; the real risks are traffic on I-880, unlit trails after dusk and heat on the Mission Peak climb. Lock the car and leave nothing visible.
  • Commute hours (roughly 6–9am and 3–7pm) make I-880 and Mission Blvd slow; plan around them.
  • Fremont Blvd and Mission Blvd each cross the freeways twice — confirm which exit before you drive.
  • Mission Peak has no shade and no water on the route; start early and carry more than you think you need.
  • Drawbridge, the baylands ghost town, is closed to entry under refuge rules.
  • Summer afternoons inland regularly pass 30°C; the bay side is 5–8°C cooler.
