Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Nordic countries ↗Decide light or dark before anything else: summer trips (June–August) and aurora trips (September–March in the Arctic) need different countries, clothes and bases.
  • Nordic countries ↗Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroes sell stronger alcohol only in state shops with short hours; buy before evening and before Sundays and holidays.
  • Denmark ↗Denmark is in the EU and the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; Greenland and the Faroe Islands have separate entry arrangements.
  • Denmark ↗Bike lanes are busy fast lanes: do not walk or stand in them, and signal before you stop if you cycle.
  • Denmark ↗Denmark is close to cashless: cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, even for small amounts.

Samsø is a 3,700-resident farming island in the Kattegat, reached by ferry from Aarhus, Hou or Kalundborg. It is known for potatoes, renewable energy and a 100 km signposted bike route. Two nights covers the north and south; day-trippers see only one end.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Bike is the default: rent in every town or bring your own on the ferry (book bike space online). A local bus links Nordby, Mårup, Sælvig, Tranebjerg, Ballen and Kolby Kås; the summer bus is free, and outside summer the call-in Telebus needs about two hours' notice. Cars come over on the Hou and Kalundborg ferries only.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Ballen

Southeast harbour, most restaurants and the festival site; ferry to Kalundborg.

Tranebjerg

Island centre and bus hub; Museum Samsø and shops, fewest beds.

Nordby

North village with inn, brewery and the road to Nordby Bakker.

Sælvig and Mårup

West coast near the Aarhus and Hou ferry berths; quiet, car or bike needed.

Kolby Kås

South harbour with smokehouse and sunsets; the quietest base.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are cycling on unlit narrow roads, cold water and fast-changing Kattegat weather; ferries can be cancelled in strong wind.
  • Book ferry and bike space ahead for June–August and the July festival.
  • The Aarhus catamaran takes passengers and bikes, not cars.
  • Country roads are narrow with no street lighting outside towns after dark.
  • Many kitchens, museums and rentals shut outside the summer season: check dates before booking.
  • Summer buses do not carry extra bikes or carts.

  2. Four riding clusters with rescue anchors: Nordby and Nordby Bakker, Stavns Fjord and Mårup, Tranebjerg and Museum Samsø, Ballen and Kolby Kås.
  3. Place pages with verified season dates (Museum Samsø, labyrinth, Vesborg lighthouse, Brattingsborg garden) and eat pages with closing days.
  4. Wind and ferry-cancellation fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
