Samsø is a 3,700-resident farming island in the Kattegat, reached by ferry from Aarhus, Hou or Kalundborg. It is known for potatoes, renewable energy and a 100 km signposted bike route. Two nights covers the north and south; day-trippers see only one end.

Get around
Bike is the default: rent in every town or bring your own on the ferry (book bike space online). A local bus links Nordby, Mårup, Sælvig, Tranebjerg, Ballen and Kolby Kås; the summer bus is free, and outside summer the call-in Telebus needs about two hours' notice. Cars come over on the Hou and Kalundborg ferries only.

- The Aarhus catamaran takes passengers and bikes, not cars.
- Country roads are narrow with no street lighting outside towns after dark.
- Many kitchens, museums and rentals shut outside the summer season: check dates before booking.
- Summer buses do not carry extra bikes or carts.
Very safe. The real risks are cycling on unlit narrow roads, cold water and fast-changing Kattegat weather; ferries can be cancelled in strong wind.
