Shinonsen新温泉町

Go for one night in a Yumura Onsen ryokan with crab or Tajima beef; skip as a base if you have no car and no onsen booking.

Shinonsen is a small Hyogo town on the San-in coast, formed from Hamasaka and Onsen, with three separate hot-spring areas: Yumura, Hamasaka and Shichikama. Yumura Onsen has no train station, so most travellers arrive by direct bus from Osaka, Kobe or Tottori, or by train to Hamasaka and then a local bus. One night is enough; two if you want the coast and the monastery.

Getting around

Hamasaka Station and its immediate sights are walkable. Buses from Hamasaka Station run to Shichikama Onsen and Yumura Onsen; check the last departure before you book a late train. Coastal and inland sights (Antai-ji, Igumi, Kutani) are far easier by car.

Kinosaki Onsen

go

Door to door: About 1 h

San-in line from Hamasaka, about 40 min; check whether a change is needed

Another onsen town with a canal and seven public baths; pairs well with a Shinonsen night.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

San-in line from Hamasaka, about 1 h 30 min

Sand dunes and the coast; a full day if you also use the bus loop.

Himejicaution

Door to door: 2.5–3 h

Limited express to Himeji, then a transfer back along the San-in line

Long for a return day; better as a stop on the way in or out.

Kobecaution

Door to door: About 3 h

Direct bus from Yumura Onsen, about 3 h

Useful as an arrival or departure leg, not a day trip.

Yumura Onsen

The main onsen village: ryokan, two public baths and most restaurants. No train station; buses from Hamasaka.

Hamasaka

Around Hamasaka Station on the San-in line: walkable sights, crab-port ryokan, easy rail access.

Shichikama Onsen

Quieter baths on the coast; bus from Hamasaka, otherwise a car helps.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, safe rural town; the real risks are the last bus from Hamasaka, winter roads inland, tattoo bans at baths and cash-only small restaurants.
  • Yumura Onsen has no train station: the last local bus from Hamasaka is the hard cutoff for a late arrival.
  • Many ryokan and baths ban tattoos; Refresh Park Yumura states tattoos are prohibited.
  • Refresh Park Yumura requires swimwear for the pool and outdoor bath; the indoor onsen is nude only.
  • Small restaurants and izakaya close early and may have no English menu; carry cash.
  • Inland roads to Antai-ji can be snowy or icy in winter: check before driving.
