Go for one night in a Yumura Onsen ryokan with crab or Tajima beef; skip as a base if you have no car and no onsen booking.

Shinonsen is a small Hyogo town on the San-in coast, formed from Hamasaka and Onsen, with three separate hot-spring areas: Yumura, Hamasaka and Shichikama. Yumura Onsen has no train station, so most travellers arrive by direct bus from Osaka, Kobe or Tottori, or by train to Hamasaka and then a local bus. One night is enough; two if you want the coast and the monastery.

Get around

Hamasaka Station and its immediate sights are walkable. Buses from Hamasaka Station run to Shichikama Onsen and Yumura Onsen; check the last departure before you book a late train. Coastal and inland sights (Antai-ji, Igumi, Kutani) are far easier by car.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
  • Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
  • Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
  • Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
  • Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
  • Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
  • Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
  • Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope

Scams and watch-outs

  • Yumura Onsen has no train station: the last local bus from Hamasaka is the hard cutoff for a late arrival.
  • Many ryokan and baths ban tattoos; Refresh Park Yumura states tattoos are prohibited.
  • Refresh Park Yumura requires swimwear for the pool and outdoor bath; the indoor onsen is nude only.
  • Small restaurants and izakaya close early and may have no English menu; carry cash.
  • Inland roads to Antai-ji can be snowy or icy in winter: check before driving.

A quiet, safe rural town; the real risks are the last bus from Hamasaka, winter roads inland, tattoo bans at baths and cash-only small restaurants.
