Ölgii is the capital of Bayan-Ölgii, Mongolia's Kazakh province, and almost nobody comes for the town itself. It is the supply point for the Altai mountains: permits, jeeps, guides, fuel and food for Altai Tavan Bogd and Tsambagarav national parks. Give the town one night on the way in and one on the way out, and build the trip around the mountains or a festival.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in 30–40 minutes and there are no street addresses, so directions come as landmarks ("2nd floor next to the post office"). Shared taxis run along the main roads and from the square; agree the price before you get in. For anything outside town you hire a jeep and driver through a tour operator or the visitor centre.

Watch out

Safety

Ölgii is a small, quiet town and crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are the cold, the altitude and the driving: mountain weather turns fast, roads outside town are tracks, and medical help is limited, so go with a local driver and carry a first-aid kit.
  • No street addresses: carry the phone number of your guesthouse and ask the driver to call.
  • Shared jeeps to the soums and to Hovd are packed well beyond the seat count; book a private jeep if you have luggage or a schedule.
  • The bazaar is closed on Mondays, which also thins out shared transport.
  • Outside Ölgii there are few paved roads and services are scarce; fuel, food and lodging are limited, so carry supplies and confirm supplies before departure with a driver who knows the route.
  • A bus route to Kazakhstan runs through Russia; check your visa situation before booking.
