Use Ölgii as a 1-night staging town for Altai Tavan Bogd or Tsambagarav, or 2 nights around the eagle festivals in late Sep or early Oct.
Ölgii is the capital of Bayan-Ölgii, Mongolia's Kazakh province, and almost nobody comes for the town itself. It is the supply point for the Altai mountains: permits, jeeps, guides, fuel and food for Altai Tavan Bogd and Tsambagarav national parks. Give the town one night on the way in and one on the way out, and build the trip around the mountains or a festival.

Get around
The town is walkable end to end in 30–40 minutes and there are no street addresses, so directions come as landmarks ("2nd floor next to the post office"). Shared taxis run along the main roads and from the square; agree the price before you get in. For anything outside town you hire a jeep and driver through a tour operator or the visitor centre.

- Entering a ger: Call 'Nokhoi khorio' from a distance, enter right foot first without knocking, move clockwise to the left (west) side; avoid: Stepping on the threshold, walking between the two pillars, turning your back to the altar
- Offered food or drink: Receive with the right hand (left hand supporting the elbow), taste a little; avoid: Refusing outright or taking with the left hand only
- Snuff bottle exchange: When a man offers his snuff bottle, take it with the right hand, open slightly, sniff and hand it back; avoid: Taking snuff if you do not want it — just smell the cap
- Feet and knocks: If you step on someone's foot, shake their hand straight away; avoid: Leaving the touch unacknowledged — it is seen as the start of a quarrel
- Fire and stove: Treat the stove as sacred; avoid: Throwing rubbish into the fire or pointing your feet at it
- Hats: Hold a hat by the crown, remove it inside; avoid: Stepping over or throwing a hat
- Guests and gifts: Bring small gifts (fruit, sweets, vodka for elders, photos of your family) to a nomad family; avoid: Handing out sweets to children on the roadside

Scams and watch-outs
- No street addresses: carry the phone number of your guesthouse and ask the driver to call.
- Shared jeeps to the soums and to Hovd are packed well beyond the seat count; book a private jeep if you have luggage or a schedule.
- The bazaar is closed on Mondays, which also thins out shared transport.
- Outside Ölgii there are few paved roads and services are scarce; fuel, food and lodging are limited, so carry supplies and confirm supplies before departure with a driver who knows the route.
- A bus route to Kazakhstan runs through Russia; check your visa situation before booking.
Ölgii is a small, quiet town and crime against visitors is rare. The real risks are the cold, the altitude and the driving: mountain weather turns fast, roads outside town are tracks, and medical help is limited, so go with a local driver and carry a first-aid kit.
