Vrindavan is a Krishna pilgrimage town on the Yamuna, 12 km from Mathura and about 50 km from Agra, with thousands of temples packed into lanes too narrow for cars. It is not a sightseeing city: you come for darshan at Banke Bihari, the ISKCON temple, Prem Mandir's evening light show and the Yamuna aarti. One night covers the core; add a second for Mathura and the parikrama walk.

Getting around

The old core is pedestrian and cycle-rickshaw only: thin lanes, no English signage, so ask or hire a guide. A short cycle-rickshaw hop (ISKCON to Banke Bihari) is about ₹20 per person. E-rickshaws and autos cover the wider roads; agree the fare before you sit. Mathura is 12 km away; allow 20–30 min by rickshaw or shared taxi.

Watch out

Safety

Vrindavan is busy but low on violent crime; the real risks are temple donation scams, monkeys, aggressive touts and summer heat. Women travellers report staring and crowding in the old lanes — dress modestly and keep a companion or a hotel-arranged rickshaw after dark.
  • Temple donation scams: a priest may perform a short ceremony then demand thousands of rupees to carve your name on marble. A few tens of rupees for kumkum is fine — walk out if pushed.
  • Insist on the temples you want to see, not the ones your guide or rickshaw driver picks.
  • Monkeys steal cameras, glasses and food, especially in the groves and at Nidhi Van. Keep glasses on a strap or wear contacts.
  • Photography is banned inside many temples; ask before shooting.
  • Shoes must come off at temples: carry socks or coins for the shoe handlers.
  • Summer heat is severe; after heavy monsoon rain the Yamuna ghats can flood — check conditions before a river-side walk.
