Kinchega protects the Menindee Lakes and the Darling River floodplain in far-west New South Wales: red soil, river red gums, lignum scrub and a chain of shallow lakes that fill and empty with the river. The park's draw is human history as much as nature — the 1875 Kinchega woolshed, the Old Kinchega Homestead ruins and the paddle-steamer PS Providence site sit within a few kilometres of each other. It is a long way from anywhere, so most visitors see it as a stop on the Barrier Highway between Broken Hill and the Darling, or as a base for the Menindee Lakes.

How much does it cost to enter Kinchega National Park?
Most NSW national parks charge no entry fee, and Kinchega has no ticket gate on Woolshed Drive. Camping and the Shearers' Quarters are booked and paid online through NSW National Parks, and rates change by season — check the current park page before you drive in.
What are the best hikes in Kinchega National Park?
The walks are short and flat rather than big hikes. The Old Kinchega Homestead walkway is the main one, about an hour return on uneven ground. The woolshed precinct and the PS Providence site on the riverbank are short strolls. There is no long-distance trail in the park.
When is the best time to visit Kinchega National Park?
April to September. Days are mild, nights are cold and the flies are fewer. January and February are the months to avoid: 40 °C days are common and there is almost no shade. September is good for birds when the lakes hold water.
Do I need a 4WD for Kinchega National Park?
No. The road from Menindee to the woolshed precinct is sealed and suitable for a normal car. Some park roads to the lakes and campgrounds are unsealed and can be rough or closed after rain, so check conditions first.
Can I camp in Kinchega National Park?
Yes. Emu Lake, Darling River and Cawndilla campgrounds are inside the park, and the Shearers' Quarters offers rooms. Book online before you arrive. Bring drinking water, cooking water and firewood — the Darling River campground has picnic tables, barbecues and toilets but no water supply.
Is Kinchega National Park worth visiting?
If you are already on the Barrier Highway or the Darling River run, yes: the 1875 woolshed, the homestead ruins and the lake country are a half-day stop with real substance. It is not worth a dedicated trip from Sydney on its own.
