Gaziantep is Turkey's fifth-largest city and the food capital of the south-east: pistachios, baklava and Antep kebabı are the reason many Turks come. The Zeugma Mosaic Museum holds the Roman floor mosaics rescued from a Euphrates town drowned by a dam in 2001, and it alone justifies the stop. The 2023 earthquake damaged the castle, several mosques and the archaeology museum, so check what has reopened before you build a day around it. The city works as a hub for Urfa, Mardin, Halfeti and Mount Nemrut, all reachable by road.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: castle, bazaars, Zeugma museum and Demokrasi Meydanı sit within about 2 km. Gaziulaş runs city buses, three tram lines and the Gaziray commuter line; the T1 tram links the railway station area to the central districts. Pay by bank card as you board. Taxis are plentiful and cheap. The inter-city bus terminal is 6 km north, reached by city bus from Bahattin Nakıpoğlu Cd outside the terminal.

Watch out

Safety

Gaziantep is a normal Turkish city for visitors: violent crime is rare, the centre is busy late, and the real issues are summer heat, traffic and post-earthquake closures. Women travelling alone report some staring in conservative districts; dress modestly away from the centre.
  • The 2023 earthquake damaged the castle, Kurtuluş Mosque and the Archaeology Museum; interiors were still closed for restoration — check before you go.
  • Gaziantep has no mainline rail service as of 2026; the Adana line is still being rebuilt. Gaziray and one daily regional train from Nizip are commuter services, not intercity.
  • Some central cafés that serve alcohol are fronts for the sex trade; if the menu and the door security look wrong, leave.
  • Summer afternoons hit 36 °C; do museums in the morning and stay in shade after 14:00.
  • Carry lira in small notes for bazaars, hamams and taxis.
