Osmaniye is a provincial capital of about 264,000 people at the foot of the Nur Mountains, on the D400 between Adana and Gaziantep. The city itself has little to see and its central mosque and clock tower were lost in the 2023 earthquake. Its value is as a base: the Neo-Hittite site of Karatepe-Aslantaş, the Abbasid castle at Toprakkale and the hill village of Zorkun are all within 35 km, and you need a car to reach them.

Getting around

The centre is flat and compact and you can walk it in about two hours; a one-way grid of southbound streets makes driving in the middle annoying and parking scarce. City minibuses exist but you are unlikely to need them. For Karatepe-Aslantaş, Toprakkale, Zorkun and Gökçedam you need your own car or a hired one with a driver.

Toprakkale Castle

Watch out

Safety

Osmaniye is a conservative, low-crime provincial city; the real risks are summer heat, rough rural roads and earthquake-damaged buildings, so keep clear of cordoned sites and drive the hill roads in daylight.
  • The 2023 earthquake damaged the central mosque and destroyed the clock tower; reconstruction of Enverül Hamit Mosque continues, so expect scaffolding and closed streets.
  • Several central hotels still house earthquake-displaced families: confirm a tourist booking in writing before you travel.
  • Trains are suspended across the region; a partial reopening toward Adana, Tarsus and Mersin is expected in 2026 but do not plan around it.
  • The otogar is 4 km north of downtown and facilities may be closed; ask whether a dolmuş transfer into town is included in your ticket.
  • Summer heat and mosquitoes in the plain are the reason locals historically moved up to the yaylas; July and August are punishing.
