Baden is a compact spa town on the Limmat, 30–37 minutes by S-Bahn from Zurich, with a walkable old town, a ruined Habsburg castle above it and Switzerland's mineral-rich thermal springs feeding the Fortyseven baths. Half the town is ABB and GE office and plant buildings, so the draw is the baths, the riverside and the small centre rather than a long sightseeing list. One night covers it; two if you add the Lägeren ridge hike or Wettingen Abbey.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: pedestrian Badstrasse, Weite Gasse and riverside paths. Buses from the station cover the edges; pay by coin in the machine on board or at some stops, or buy a 6-journey strip card at the ticket office for the price of 5. Trains: S6 (about 37 min) and S12 (about 30 min) to Zurich, plus Aargau S23/S27 west to Olten and Waldshut and interregional trains to Basel and Bern.

Watch out

Safety

Baden is a low-risk town; the real hazards are the Limmat current and dams when swimming, slippery paths up to Stein Castle, and pickpockets only in the usual station and market crowds.
  • Swimming in the Limmat is only safe when the current is weak and no dam warning signs are up; follow locals and stay clear of dams.
  • The '1/2' (halbtax) button on ticket machines is for holders of a CHF 150 annual half-fare pass, not visitors.
  • Museum Langmatt closes 15 Dec–1 Mar; check before you plan a day around it.
  • Some restaurants allow smoking inside; ask for a non-smoking table if it matters.
